  • Paving Mix Poll

Some parts of the country install two courses of hotmix to make a parking lot or driveway. A base course with larger rock, and a surface course with smaller rock. In my neck if the woods, this is rarely seen. We will make new installs with a single course of 1/2” agg. If the thickness exceeds 2”, then we will do it in lifts, but the mix remains the same. So in your area, do you do multiple courses with different mix for driveways or commercial? For those of you that do, comment below on why it’s done. I wouldn’t imagine it’s for strength to use multiple courses, but our method holds up very well. I’m curious.

For overlays we install a single course, but new construction is two courses with different mix.

Just about everything in a parking lot is 1/2" aggregate. Oil contents vary.
